Lucy sipped her drink and turned to look at Richard. The past thirty minutes since she arrived here, their attention had been on the performance. He seemed to be enjoying himself, nodding along to the music as he drank his Mojito.

Richard glanced at her. “Enjoying the show?” he asked.

“It’s a brilliant performance.” She looked around the bar, noticing how many people were in attendance. The turn-out was impressive, and Lucy was certain if they held a special event every night, the place would be packed.

She saw two cops standing at each exit of the bar, and it reminded of her brief rendezvous with Solomon at the station hours ago.

I didn’t kill my wife, I would never.

Was he telling the truth? Although Solomon didn’t look like a killer to her, she could never be sure. She had been wrong in the past, when she was linked to two murder investigations. The last people she had thought were capable of the murders turned out to be the guilty, and she never knew who to be cautious of. Richard was someone she had previously thought was guilty of a murder that had occurred in Ivy Creek a few months ago.

She stole a glance at him as the last thought crossed her mind. How could she even suspect he was a murderer?

Richard looked so at ease with his Mojito in one hand. She couldn’t tell if he really enjoyed jazz, or this was an excuse to take her out because he barely knew a thing about the band. She dragged in a deep breath, gaining his attention.

“What do you think about the recent murder in town? Vanessa Mumford’s sudden death? I mean, do you also suspect the husband?”

Richard lifted one shoulder casually. “In times like this, there is never a concrete reason to suspect someone from the grieving family, except there’s concrete evidence.”

“You’re saying you think he murdered his wife?”

“I’m saying the cops definitely must have solid evidence to suspect him.” A moment of silence passed between them, and he extended a hand over the table to touch hers. “We should enjoy the night and not worry about the town’s latest events. Tonight is about fun, remember?”

Lucy matched his smile. She chased thoughts of Solomon’s case out of her mind and re-focused on the music. When the musician on the saxophone played a few notes, the crowd cheered, and Richard joined, pumping a fist into the air as he sang along to the next song that came up.

She stood up to join, singing at the top of her voice and giggling as she mimicked Richard’s dance steps, rolling her shoulders and hips alternatively to each side. He took her hand when it was over, and they sat back down.

“That was exciting,” he remarked.

Lucy pushed the strands of hair clinging to her forehead. She struggled to catch her breath, her eyes locked on Richard’s for a second before she puffed out air from her lips, and broke contact.

“I’m definitely getting a ticket next time this band is in town,” Richard commented.
